George Carver was born to a slave mother on July 12th, 1864 in Diamond Grove, Missouri. There was never an established father for him, and his mother had no name. George was a very frail child and was of little use in the fields, or any other physical activity. The man who owned his mother and himself went by the name of Moses Carver, who had a wife by the name Susan Carver. Due to his limited physical abilities he would go off into the fields and the woods to study plants and their uses. His mother died when Carver was no more than five years old. He lived with Moses and Susan Carver and gave him his name after adopting him. However, it didn’t take long before George Carver wanted to leave the farm and he did so when he was twelve years old. He was sure that he could make it on his own because of his immense scoutl5 hunger for knowledge of plants. He took many risks like this one and overcame obstacles like having black skin and a frail body and worked his way up from the ground. He was the first African American to go to school at Simpson College, to study piano and art (Bellis). He was the black sheep in a herd of thousands. He ignored everyone and focused on his schoolwork. Later on in his life he created many inventions that were believed by most to be rubbish and unrealistic in the real world. However, after many modifications each his inventions became just as important as the last. He ignored the black stereotype, the way all African Americans were supposed to act, at that time, and he became the best he knew he was capable of being. He once said, “The Strongest people in the world aren’t those most protected; they are the ones that must struggle against adversity and obstacles â€" and surmount them â€" to survive†(Wikipedia). He said this from experience in his own life and that explains just what he had to go through. He never had a free ride, but he was eager, adventurous, and ambitious and that is how he became a great scientist. George overcame these hardships and that is why he should be considered a great American.
