Amour (2012), in which a middle-class French couple in their 80s, Georges and Anne Laurent, both music teachers, live out the final months of a long marriage. They're played by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, two great actors with whom many of us have grown up and grown old over more than half a century that has seen Riva appear in Alain Resnais's first film, Hiroshima mon amour, and Trintignant star in Truffaut's final picture, Vivement dimanche!.
Eva (Isabelle Huppert) is Anne and Georges' daughter. Living out of town she is unable to visit on a consistent basis, but when she does another layer to the plot is peeled away. Georges feels forced to defend the decisions he's made based on doctor recommendations and Anne's wishes. Dealing with the vision of her mother in such a state, unable to speak in full sentences or even make sense when she does, causes Eva to wonder what more can be done.Jean-Louis Trintignant as Georges, Emmanuelle Riva as Anne, Isabelle Huppert as Eva, Alexandre Tharaud as Alexandre, William Shimell as Geoff, Ramón Agirre as Concierge's husband, Rita Blanco as Concierge, Carole Franck as Nurse, Dinara Droukarova as Nurse, Laurent Capelluto as Police officer, Jean-Michel Monroc as Police officer, Suzanne Schmidt as Neighbor, Walid Afkir as Paramedic, Damien Jouillerot as Paramedic.

Amour begins with a pre-credit sequence that deliberately removes one of the film's two elements of dramatic suspense. It is drama and romance movie. The police break into a handsome Parisian apartment to discover, neatly laid out on the bed, the corpse of an elderly woman, her head ceremoniously surrounded by flowers. The intruders wear masks to protect themselves from some form of contamination. The word "Amour" then fills the screen and there is an extended flashback to the preceding months, beginning with the carefully dressed Georges and Anne sitting in the fourth row of the stalls at a piano recital. We hear the beginning of the first work but only see the audience: this is the only scene outside the couple's flat in the whole film.

Perhaps the most horrifying parts of the film are the first, tiny indications that something is wrong. Anne awakens in the middle of the night and stares into space â€" and then assures the baffled Georges that nothing is wrong. The next morning at breakfast, she becomes as still as a statue, her beautiful, mild face as serene as a death mask. When Anne awakens a minute later, with no clue as to why Georges is suddenly so agitated, Riva superbly conveys her sudden, unmentionable thought: is my husband losing his mind?
