With the huge selection of sports that are played year round, the need for entertainment is at an all time high. In the past, the majority of sports were played outdoors at different times of the year and spectators came from near and far to enjoy the games. Now with the technology and space, just about any sport can be played indoors and spectators can enjoy their favorite sport in a more relaxed setting.
One sport that started out being played outdoors, is the exhilarating sport of hockey. When hockey was first invented, it was played on the frozen ice of a pond or lake which was quite dangerous because as the game was being played, the ice would start to melt slowly from the friction of the players and sometimes cause it to start melting. As the ice melted, the players would have to stop playing or they would risk the chance of falling into the water.
Back then, whoever played hockey had no gear. The only thing that the players would need to play the game with, was a pair of ice skates, a stick and something sufficient enough to use as a puck. They didn't have anything specific to catch the puck with to score, except for something that was strong enough to handle the impact. This made the game a very rough sport and for that reason people came from all over to participate and or watch.
During these games, there were usually one or more people who knew a little about treating any of the accidents that occurred during the game. There were not as many rules of the game as there are now and whenever a fight would break out among the players, the people watching the game would also get involved. That was the main reason why women were not allowed to go to any of the hockey games in the past. Even though some of them liked the sport, the risk of them getting hurt would keep them from attending.
Hockey of today has come a long way from the time it was invented. It is still played outdoors by a lot of people. When you see the players having fun on the ice, they are not only men. Women also are involved in the sport and children of all ages both girls and boys, enjoy the sport as well.
People who enjoy the sport of hockey do not only play outdoors anymore. There are a lot of indoor facilities that they can play in. When you see people playing hockey, they are well protected on the ice with the gear that they wear. They are protected from head to toe and they are watched carefully in case of any type of accidents that might occur.
There are teams that are not only made up of only men anymore. Women's teams have become more popular in the past few years and watching them play against each other is a lot different from watching the men's teams. They have teams for children and as long as they know how to skate, they can play teamed up with other children according to their ability.
Hockey playing is not only played in certain areas and certain times. When it is not cold enough to play on ice, it can be played without ice and roller-skates are used. With the proper gear, it can be played all over. Setting up a game area is not a problem. As long as you have the room, it can be played right outside of your home. There are kids playing on dead-end streets where the traffic is minimal and they are having a lot of fun. There are parks that allow hockey to be played on their premises as long as you wear your safety gear.
Whether you are a hockey fan or not, the best place to catch a game that you will never forget, is where you can watch the real professionals play. Having the opportunity to see the great game played in an arena such as Madison Square Garden in New York City with the pros playing it out, is a real treat. No matter where you live, if you have the chance to view professional teams do their thing on the ice, you will be inspired to become a lifelong fan of the game.
Hockey has come a long way through the years and the game is still a non stop excitement. If your adrenaline needs to be lifted, participating in the game or just watching it, will surely do the trick.
